IPL: Indian Paisa League
BCCI generates a revenue of 4000–5000 crore each year from IPL
Indian cricket has been winning hearts as well as trophies for last few years. The team is consistently topping the ICC rankings for a while now. On root cause analysis, the most obvious conclusive reason is Indian Premier league.
Below are the primary sources of revenue for IPL:
- Central revenues: 75% of the revenues is earned via this route. For example, media rights for live streaming of IPL. Media rights in 2020 were with Vivo for Rs 440 crore while it came down to Rs 222 when it went into the hands of Dream 11.
- Sponsorship income: Each team ties up with corporates on an individual basis. For example, niine’s tie-up with Rajasthan Royals increased its revenue share to 9% in Rajasthan.
- Ticketing income: The home team enjoys the benefits of hosting the game. The teams are a big reason why people used to be flooded in the stadium in an IPL match.
Each franchise generally earns revenue in the range of 300–400 crores. The major uptick was observed in 2018–19 when satellite rights for four years went on an unimaginable spree. Prior to that per franchise earned revenues used to be around 200 crores. Kolkata Knight Riders has been the only company in IPL history which has made profit in every single year of its business. The revenues are expected to further rise when new franchise will join the league from next year onwards.
IPL’s impact on various levels:
- Social: IPL gives Indian families a reason to unite and celebrate. I know the statement is too far fetched but it conveys the point. Even for the members who could not unite, it serves as a good conversation starter and allows facilitates a discussion point.
- Economic: The impact of IPL on economy is multi-fold, it can be seen within as well as outside the fence. The spectators in the stadium do not shy away from buying overpriced pepsi cans neither do the college student who subscribed to hotstar just so that ge can enjoy AB devilliers bat.
- Technological: This is one of the least talked about feature of IPL. A person living in a remote village gets a hands-on learning when he tunes in to listen his favourite commentator, Sir Akash Chopra. The platform also teches them how to use the play and pause button.
- Psychological: A common man needs someone in his life whom he may idolize. IPL saves him firstly, from the fear of missing out. Secondly, it gave people a ray of home amidst the pandemic. Cricket fever in India is rising with a rate comparable to the pandemic.
